The Lala Dining Room Project

designed and oversaw the rebuild of a texture rich dining room that needed to serve multiple purposes- from doing homework to hosting epic dinner parties.

THE Story

This dining room is where the family eats every day, so it had to work hard. The brief was a room that could be dressed up for holiday dinners with more than 20 guests, then dressed down for a quiet weeknight meal while their daughter does homework at the table.

We started with the architecture. We exposed the original cedar beams hidden above the plaster and lath ceiling, and rebuilt the crown molding to draw the eye up and give the room more height. From there we chose classic materials meant to last, so the space feels timeless rather than trendy.

Every piece in this room earns its place. Durable, natural materials stand up to daily family life, and a mix of historic character and modern comfort lets the space shift easily from an everyday kitchen-table feel to a formal dinner party. That flexibility, a room that dresses up or down on demand, was the goal from day one.

Grasscloth wallpaper was used for the top portion of the room to add a layer of depth. We used vintage light fixtures to add a touch of luxe as well as nod to the home’s historic roots (built in 1922).
